Character Counter: Measure Text for SEO and Social Media
Every platform has strict limits: Twitter (280), meta descriptions (155), SEO titles (60), Instagram captions (2200), SMS (160). Our counter measures characters, words, lines, and paragraphs in real time as you type.
Includes counts with and without spaces, average word length, reading time estimated at 200 wpm, and status indicators for each social media platform (visual bar showing how close you are to the limit).
Ideal for content creators, marketers, copywriters, and social media managers. Runs 100% in your browser — no text sent to servers.
How does it work?
- 1Paste or type your text
The text field accepts up to 100,000 characters.
- 2Review the metrics
You'll see characters (with/without spaces), words, lines, paragraphs, and reading time.
- 3Check platform limits
Colored indicators show if you're within the range for Twitter, meta description, SEO title, etc.
Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on the platform. Twitter counts each emoji as 2 characters. Our counter offers both metrics: 'JavaScript characters' (each code unit) and 'user characters' (each visible glyph, using Intl.Segmenter).
Twitter uses a special algorithm: URLs always count as 23 characters (regardless of real length), each emoji counts as 2, and multibyte characters like Chinese count as 2. Our counter simulates this.
Between 140 and 160 characters. Google truncates at 155-160 pixels (approximately 155 chars). Below 120 loses opportunity; over 160 gets cut off.
